This book examines three urban development projects in Innsbruck: the Campagne Areal Reichenau, the Zeughaus project and the Young and Student Housing Sandwirt under the guiding principle of sustainable urban development. The basis for this is the concept of the sustainability triangle, which focuses on measures, the actors involved and their tasks and challenges. Planning and implementation are analyzed comparatively on the basis of document studies and interviews with experts and stakeholders. While the Campagne-Areal Reichenau and the Sandwirt project are considered examples of best practice due to their balanced application of sustainable approaches, the Zeughaus project only partially exploits its potential. The city of Innsbruck safeguards public interests, while the non-profit developers Neue Heimat Tirol and Innsbrucker Immobiliengesellschaft are responsible for the building and also act sustainably within the company. Civil society is only involved to a limited extent. Common features include architectural competitions, subsidized rental housing built to passive house standards, sustainable mobility solutions and green open spaces.
