he reading of Systematic Theology can be a great voyage of discovery into a rich and deep, an inclusive and yet elaborated, vision and understanding of human life in the presence of the mystery of God' (H. Richard Niebuhr). The real intent and accomplishment of Dr Tillich is to show that the full truth of human existence can only be grasped through a meeting and ultimately a uniting of personal faith and rational understanding. He is interpreting the Christian faith to the mind of twentieth-century man with such penetration that the self-understanding both of the secular culture and of the Christian church is being deepened and clarified' (Daniel Day Williams). 'Tillich's Systematic Theology is beyond doubt the richest, most suggestive and most challenging philosophical theology our day has produced' (Journal of Religion).
Addysgwr i John Heywood Thomas, Paul Tillich, oedd y diwinydd cyntaf i mi geisio'i ddirnad go iawn. Fe'm rhyfeddwyd gan ymdriniaeth ddofn Tillich â rhai o gwestiynau ysbrydol mwyaf yr ugeinfed ganrif, ac roedd yn ddryswch i mi nad oedd ymwybyddiaeth gyhoeddus o gwbl ym Mhrydain o'r meddwl mawr hwn. Mewn anerchiad ym Mhrifysgol Rhydychen yn 2014 siaradais am Coleridge a Tillich ac yn fuan wedyn dechreuais i a John Heywood Thomas siarad am brosiect i gyfieithu Tillich i Gymru. Dywedai Tillich yn aml wrth y rhai a oedd yn ceisio deall ei ymagwedd, "darllenwch fy mhregethau yn gyntaf", felly fy syniad cychwynnol oedd gwahodd diwinyddion ac athronwyr i gyfieithu pregethau unigol gan Tillich, gan ychwanegu myfyrdod byr ynghylch perthnasedd y deunydd i'r cyd-destun Cymreig presennol. John fyddai'n golygu'r casgliad. Rwy'n gobeithio y gallwn wneud hynny o hyd, ond awgrymodd John ar unwaith y dylem ddechrau gydag Ar y Ffin. Y cyhoeddiad hwn yw ffrwyth y cydweithio hwnnw.
