H¿d is famously majestic, the S¿rah which turned some of the hair of the Prophet ¿ grey, whereas conversely S¿rah Y¿suf tells 'the best of stories' or 'the most beautiful of narratives' about the original 'sons of Isr¿'¿l - Ban¿ Isr¿'¿l' whose descendants' histories would be so archetypal and, as the Muslims of their time, cause for reflection for the Muslims of this time. It is thus invaluable to see the story of this Prophetic family set against the background of the early Pharaonic state, which would also contribute a great deal to subsequent ages and our own in the realm of state-formation.

Ab¿ Müammad ibn A¿mad ibn Ab¿ Bakr ibn Far¿ al-An¿¿r¿ al-Khazraj¿ al-Andalus¿ Al-Qur¿ub¿ (610-11 AH/1214 CE - 671 AH/1273 CE) was born in Cordoba in Spain, but moved in 1236 to Cairo in Egypt, where he lived until his death. He was M¿lik¿ in fiqh, and, although he composed other works, he is most famous for this tafs¿r.
