"Sixteenth-century Spain. After years spent conquering new lands through fire, steel and tears, Martâin del Puerto arrives at the monastery of Yuste unaware that fate has linked him to the Emperor Charles V. After abdicating the throne and with the end of his life approaching, the monarch has chosen this remote and quiet retreat for his retirement. Their glory days may be behind them, but every afternoon the man who was once the world's most powerful ruler and the grizzled mariner sit together to share confidences and memories. The explorer's stories transport the old king to distant lands he commanded but never visited. The adventures and misfortunes del Puerto recounts illuminate the ways the conquest of the Indies not only linked two worlds but also two ways of thinking about life"--
