For years, I quietly penned poems and short stories, stashing them away without any intention of sharing them with the world. Life unfolded, and I enrolled in writing classes at the University of Wisconsin and the Literary Loft in Minneapolis, where I encountered Peter Geye, a Minnesota Book Award winner and seasoned teacher. Our inaugural assignment was straightforward: compose a short story during class. I wrote "The Bruised Peach." Little did I know that this tale would later find its way into the literary spotlight as a Hummingbird Prize Editor's Choice winner, courtesy of Pulp Literary. Yet, my literary journey didn't stop there. "The 2nd Coming of Orlando Rock" marked my first complete novel, a labor of love that I had shelved for over a decade. Meanwhile, "The Change," my second novel, garnered an SDSU merit award, and "Killing Bodhi," my third, won recognition as a Page Turner Award Finalist. But the path from a finished manuscript to publication is a treacherous odyssey. Despite accolades and honors, neither of my novels graced the shelves of bookstores. But life has a way of weaving unexpected threads. Amidst my writing endeavors, a parallel universe unfolded-one of clay and kilns. My wife, Cynthia Mosedale, and I embarked on a successful ceramics career, collecting accolades and forging a livelihood from clay. One day, Orlando Rock resurfaced, its characters clamoring for attention. Their voices, once muted, now vibrated with urgency. But this time, their narrative diverged from the version I'd penned years ago. Enter Madison-a gifted artist haunted by voices and visions, a woman shrouded in secrets. And alongside her, Willi, a worldly ceramic artist who dismissed the notion of intersecting realms.Together, they confront Madison's twisted past, the specter of murder, and a mobster's vendetta. Passion ignited, mysteries unraveled, and the nightmarish reality of indictment loomed large. Rediscovering Orlando Rock was both a pleasure and a revelation. Guided by unseen hands, it transformed into the tale it is today, a tapestry woven from art shows, near-death experiences, and the winding Willow River that graces my Hudson, Wisconsin, abode. I continue to mold clay, write stories, and savor the gentle murmur of the river just beyond my back porch, a testament to the intricate dance between creativity and existence.
