"The Adventures of Reddy Fox" by Thornton W. Burgess is a captivating tale that follows the mischievous and daring escapades of Reddy Fox, a young and clever fox living in the Green Meadows and Green Forest. Reddy, under the tutelage of his wise Granny Fox, learns the essential skills of survival, including how to outsmart Farmer Brown's boy and his dog, Bowser the Hound. The story begins with Granny Fox teaching Reddy the art of crossing a railroad bridge, a skill that proves useful in evading predators. As Reddy grows more confident, he becomes bolder, often boasting about his cleverness and taking unnecessary risks, such as stealing a pet chicken from Farmer Brown's boy. This act of bravado leads to Reddy being shot and injured, forcing him to rely on the care and wisdom of Granny Fox. Throughout the narrative, Reddy encounters various woodland creatures, each with their own perspectives on his antics. Characters like Peter Rabbit, Johnny Chuck, and Unc' Billy Possum provide a rich tapestry of interactions that highlight the dynamics of the animal community. Despite his injuries, Reddy's spirit remains unbroken, and he continues to learn valuable lessons about humility, caution, and the importance of community. The story is not only a delightful adventure but also a moral tale about the consequences of pride and the virtues of wisdom and prudence.
Autorenporträt
Born January 17, 1874 in Sandwich, Massachusetts, on Cape Cod, Burgess was the son of Caroline F. Haywood and Thornton W. Burgess Sr., a direct descendant of Thomas Burgess, one of the first Sandwich settlers in 1637. Thornton, Sr., died the same year his son was born, and the young Thornton, Jr. was brought up by his mother in Sandwich. They lived in humble circumstances. As a youth, he worked tending cows, picking trailing arbutus (mayflowers) or berries, shipping water lilies from local ponds, selling candy, and trapping muskrats. William C. Chipman, one of his employers, lived on Discovery Hill Road, a wildlife habitat of woodland and wetland. This habitat became the setting of many stories in which Burgess refers to Smiling Pool and the Old Briar Patch.
