Edith Wharton (1862-1937) est une figure incontournable de la littérature américaine du début du XXe siècle. Née dans une famille aristocratique new-yorkaise, elle reçoit une éducation soignée et voyage beaucoup en Europe, développant très tôt un goût prononcé pour les lettres. Mariée à un riche banquier bostonien, Edith Wharton fréquente la haute société mais se sent vite à l'étroit dans ce milieu guindé. Elle commence à écrire des nouvelles et des romans qui décrivent avec acuité les travers et les drames cachés de cette caste privilégiée. Son talent s'épanouit pleinement avec des uvres majeures comme Chez les heureux du monde (1905), Ethan Frome (1911) ou Au temps de l'innocence (1920), qui lui vaut le prix Pulitzer, faisant d'elle la première femme à recevoir cette distinction. Installée en France à partir de 1907, Edith Wharton s'engage pendant la Première Guerre mondiale auprès des réfugiés et des orphelins. Son action lui vaudra la Légion d'honneur. Dans les années 1920, elle partage sa vie entre sa villa de Hyères et ses voyages, et poursuit son uvre romanesque. Observatrice lucide et ironique de son temps, Edith Wharton a porté un regard sans concession sur l'Amérique de la Gilded Age et ses contradictions. Son style élégant et incisif, son sens aigu de la psychologie en font l'une des grandes dames de la littérature, dont l'uvre reste d'une étonnante modernité.
