My own journey began far from boardrooms and startups. I grew up poor in rural Mississippi, using humor to mask my feelings of inferiority in the classroom. During a chemistry lab, my science teacher, Mrs. Beard, pulled me aside with words that changed everything: "You're a smart young man. Are you going to choose to rot in this little town, or are you going to make something of yourself?" It was the wake up call I needed. She believed in me and showed me I had options. She invested in me through science fairs, competitions, and tutoring until I graduated with honors. My music teacher, Mr. Lockhart, taught me how to play the French horn well enough to earn a music scholarship. Combined with my academic scholarship and military service, it was just enough to get me to college and a future I'd never imagined possible. I know the power of having someone in your corner early on. I was fortunate to receive that kind of support throughout my career, and I've built my career on paying it forward. My hope is that The Art of Startup Failure serves as that same kind of mentorship for you, offering practical insights you can apply to your own journey.
