Eliza Fenwick was a Cornish-born author, recognized for her works in both children's literature and other genres. Born on February 1, 1767, in Cornwall, England, Fenwick's life was marked by personal struggles, including a troubled marriage to John Fenwick, an alcoholic. Together, they had two children, but Fenwick eventually left her husband. She later moved to Barbados, where she lived with her children and ran a school alongside her daughter. Throughout her life, Fenwick wrote several works, with her most notable being Secresy; or The Ruin on the Rock (1795), Mary and Her Cat (1804), and Visits to the Junior Library (1805). Fenwick's literary contributions include cautionary tales and children's books that are still remembered today. She passed away on December 8, 1840, in Providence, Rhode Island, at the age of 73. Her life and works reflect the challenges of her time, as well as her commitment to providing educational material for younger audiences.
