William Alexander Clouston was a Scottish folklorist born in 1843 in Stromness, Orkney. He is best known for his contributions to folklore and literature in the 19th century. Clouston's work focused on preserving and documenting the rich traditions and tales of the Orkney Islands and other parts of Scotland. His most significant contributions include his efforts in compiling and editing various folkloric collections, most notably in relation to the oral traditions of the region. He was known for his deep interest in collecting myths, legends, and folk narratives, which helped to preserve Scottish cultural heritage. Clouston's writings were often geared toward educating a wider audience about the significance of folklore in understanding cultural and historical contexts. He passed away on 23 October 1896 at the age of 53. Despite his relatively short life, his work left a lasting impact on the study of folklore in Scotland, and he remains a significant figure in the academic exploration of Scottish traditions and myths.
