Autorenporträt
Hired in 1977, Fikes published quite a few journal, magazine, and newspaper articles and several monographs mainly pertaining to African American history and literature and the achievements of the descendants of Africa in Europe and Latin America. His co-authored 1981 article, "Black Pioneers of San Diego, 1850 to 1900," for which he wrote most of the text, was made into a booklet and widely distributed by the San Diego Historical Society. In 1993, the California Court of Appeals ruled in favor of Fikes and a Latino colleague who had filed an excessive workload grievance, supported by their union, which reaffirmed the faculty status and rights of librarians. Fikes was editor of the newsletter of the California Black Faculty and Staff Association from 1979 to 2001. He also wrote two online books concerning SDSU's black and military alumni. Honors include Africana Studies Department Unsung Hero Award (2004), SDSU Monty for Outstanding Faculty (2007), Earl B. Gilliam Bar Association Award for Community Service (2009), and NAACP W.E.B. Du Bois Scholarship Award (2011). He retired in 2012.
