Disability and Self-Perception are the keys to this beautifully constructed Prize Winning novel. Seeing an artistic depth in Edward's gracefully twisted spine, a young art student begs him to sit for her. Dubious but flattered, Edward is awakened from years of apathy to experience emotions he cannot suppress or contain. Seeing himself for the first time in the eyes of another brings him a strength that overrides his vulnerability. This tale of secrecy, love and eventual understanding explores our perceptions of beauty and what constitutes difference.
