The author invites readers to revisit how they think and speak about the church. His plea is ecclesiological (the church's study of the church) because all the subthemes are related to the Church's beliefs and practices. It is maverick (independent from the herd) because the themes addressed are typically ignored, undervalued, or misunderstood. It is philological (the study of words) in that it seeks to guide us to use scriptural and theological language in ways consistent with Scripture.
