Angel Island, the Ellis Island of the West, carries the stories of Wren Atwood and Wong Ying Fa, two sixteen-year-olds trapped on the island for very different reasons at very different times. Wren, a rebellious spirit, finds herself working under the supervision of her strict mother, a park ranger on the island. On the desolate island, Wren encounters an agitated, enormous, red-crowned crane, rumored to have lived on the island for hundreds of years, and a skittish Chinese boy dressed in vintage clothing. The boy follows Wren around the island but hides whenever he spots a ranger. The boy, Ying Fa, who was supposed to have swift processing on the island in 1919, endured crowded barracks, harsh treatment, and family destruction after being accused of being a paper son. Ultimately, the teens' worlds collide, forcing Wren to confront a shocking truth about her family's grim connection to Wong Ying Fa's ancestors.
