Autorenporträt
Donald Robert Perry Marquis was an American humorist, journalist, and author whose career spanned multiple literary forms including poetry, novels, plays, and newspaper columns. Born on July 29, 1878, in Walnut, Illinois, he became best known for creating the beloved characters Archy, a poetic cockroach, and Mehitabel, a carefree alley cat, who appeared in his humorous verse published through his columns. Marquis had a gift for blending sharp social commentary with light hearted humor, often using unique narrative voices and free verse to express deeper observations about human nature and society. His work frequently explored the absurdities of modern life with wit and philosophical nuance. He was married twice, first to Reina Melcher from 1909 to 1923, and later to Marjorie Vonnegut from 1926 to 1936, and he had two children, Robert and Barbara. Marquis passed away in New York on December 29, 1937, at the age of 59. His legacy endures through his innovative style, memorable characters, and the enduring charm of his satirical and imaginative writing that bridged journalism and literature.
