In "The Curlytops and Their Pets," the Martin family receives a surprising letter from Uncle Toby, who is about to embark on a long voyage. Uncle Toby requests that Mr. Martin take charge of his "collection," which turns out to be a menagerie of pets, including two dogs, a cat, a monkey, a parrot, an alligator, and some white rats and mice. The story begins with the Curlytops-Teddy, Janet, and their younger brother Trouble-playing by a brook near their home. Trouble, as usual, gets into a predicament by floating away in a box on the brook, but is quickly rescued by his family. The Martins then embark on an automobile journey to Uncle Toby's house in Pocono, curious about the mysterious collection. Upon arrival, they are greeted by Mrs. Watson, Uncle Toby's housekeeper, who warns them of the noise and chaos inside the house. The family is soon introduced to the lively and noisy pets, each with its own developing personality. Teddy is thrilled by the trick-performing poodles, while Janet is enchanted by the Persian cat. Trouble, initially frightened by the monkey, soon finds the situation amusing. The story unfolds with the Martins adjusting to the unexpected responsibility of caring for Uncle Toby's pets, leading to a series of humorous and heartwarming adventures.
