In The Death of Critical Approaches, Mariwan Hasan challenges the dominance of traditional literary theories in the interpretation of literature. He argues that major critical frameworks-such as Marxism, postcolonialism, deconstruction, and gender studies-have become overly rigid, repetitive, and disconnected from the literary texts they aim to interpret. These theories often prioritise ideological critique over the literary and aesthetic qualities of the text, reducing literature to a tool for political or social analysis. Hasan critiques what is known as the "hermeneutics of suspicion"-an approach that assumes texts always conceal hidden power structures or ideological messages that critics must expose. While this method has historically opened important discussions, Hasan argues that it now limits our understanding and appreciation of literature. It trains readers to be suspicious and analytical rather than engaged and responsive to the literary work itself. Instead, Hasan advocates for a post-critical approach that emphasises close reading, emotional engagement, and an appreciation for the aesthetic and formal qualities of literature.
