We studied the metabolism of hyaluronic acid, chondroitin-4-sulfate, and dermatan sulfate. Proteoglycans cover the surface of cells and play an important role in ion exchange, immune responses, and tissue differentiation. Genetic disorders of glycosaminoglycan degradation lead to the development of a large group of hereditary metabolic diseases called mucopolysaccharidoses.
