The ever helpful Sandie Shark is a gentle read-along picture book about kindness, consent, and finding the right way to help. Sandie Shark likes to help, but sometimes her help causes more problems than it solves. At break time, Sandie tries to cheer up her friends, speed things along, and join in with their games. But she soon learns that helping works best when you ask first, listen carefully, and respect what others want. This story supports emotional literacy, empathy, and consent in children aged 2 to 5. It aligns with key social-emotional learning (SEL) goals in preschool and pre-K early learning, making it ideal for shared reading at home, in early education classrooms, and child care settings. Drawing on principles from the Australian Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF Version 2.0) and UK Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), this story encourages children's personal, social, and emotional development through gentle storytelling and relatable characters.

Together the On The Reef series of books offer language strategies and safe, playful moments for emotional learning. Each story is informed by the EYLF's vision of belonging, being and becoming, and reflects Melanie's belief that every child deserves to feel seen, valued, and heard.
