Autorenporträt
For a long time, I wondered if I would ever be able to meet people who were once unwelcome in my country. During my school days, history lessons were limited to dates of battlefields. We were not taught how much people had suffered during National Socialism and what had happened to undesirable citizens. It was not discussed at home either. It was only through films, and later through books about the Holocaust, that I learned about the horrors of the Nazis. I was ashamed of it. My history lessons in a secondary school in Hamburg were to be different from what I myself had experienced. Together with the pupils, I set out to find answers. We researched extracurricular learning environments and searched through files and books. This led to encounters that not only changed my life, but also enriched it.
