The French Army of the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-1748) is an in-depth study of Louis XV's army. This first volume covers its command structures, generals, and the uniforms and colours of the royal household troops. Each company is clearly described in detail, including their composition, successive commanders and weaponry. This study is based on original contemporary documents conserved in different collections, including the Musée de L'Armée, Bibliotheque Mazarin, and the Chateau de Vincennes, some never published before in English, and builds on the research of the late Pierre Charrie, eminent French vexillologist, General Hanotaux, the foremost historian of the Maison du Roi, together with the staff of these institutions and the archives of La Sabretache; Société d'Etudes d'Histoire Militaire. Many other researchers have contributed the results of their work, including some illustrations by Jean-Claude Colrat, of Le Briquet. The illustrations are based on contemporary engravings, sketches, watercolours and paintings together with original artefacts and descriptions from contemporary sources. Subsequent volumes will cover the French and foreign infantry regiments, the cavalry, dragoons, artillery, light infantry and much more, and each volume will be richly illustrated.
