Mary Noailles Murfree, born on January 24, 1850, in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and passing away in the same town on July 31, 1922, was an American author who wrote under the pen name Charles Egbert Craddock. She was the daughter of William Law Murfree. Murfree is best known for her novels and short stories, particularly those set in the Appalachian region. Her works often centered on the lives and experiences of rural inhabitants, capturing their struggles and resilience. Influenced by her upbringing in Tennessee, Murfree's writing reflected her intimate understanding of the landscape and people of the area. Though not widely known today, her literary contributions were significant in their time, offering vivid depictions of nature and rural life. Her works continue to be appreciated for their realism and insightful portrayal of the challenges faced by those living in isolated communities.
