When a garlic-loving, Yiddish-speaking family is forced out of their garlic-bulb house, they must search for a new place, and a new community, to call home. The Garlic Eaters live underground in a cozy house made entirely out of garlic. They love how the plant smells and tastes; they even wear garlic peels and sleep on garlic cloves. When a garlic-loving, Yiddish-speaking family is forced out of their garlic-bulb house, they must search for a new place, and a new community, to call home. Then one day, a very large mole storms through their beloved home, forcing them to leave. And so begins the family's journey to find a new place to live—and a community that will embrace them, and their favorite food, just the way they are. Full of heart, whimsy, and Yiddish vocabulary, The Garlic Eaters introduces young readers to a universal story: being exiled and alienated because of one's identity, starting over somewhere else, and the repair that can be found in community care. Reboot Studios is a Presenting Partner on The Garlic Eaters, supporting its development, release, and educational impact.
Madison Safer is an illustrator who is happiest in a forest full of mushrooms. She is inspired by Jewish paper cuttings, quilt patterns, and the warmth of a fire after a very cold day. When she is not napping or drawing, Madison is most often found drinking tea, practicing her challah braid, or stealing flowers. She is the illustrator of many children's books, including Before Music: Where Instruments Come From (written by Annette Bay Pimentel) and Bring Back the Babka! (written by Marilyn Wolpin). Her forthcoming books include Hanukkah Is Here, Good Medicine (written by Kate Hoefler), and How Do You Like Your Latkes?!? (written by Ronna Mandel). Madison lives with her mischievous pup, Virginia Woof, in the sleepy hills of Western Massachusetts.
