In the Soviet Union during the 1950's, Christianity and its believers were persecuted by those in the communist regime. Atheism was to be the official state ideology and as such, was heavily promoted in schools. As a school teacher in Moscow's most prestigious institution focused on educating the children of the Soviet Union's elite, Veronika Perova, a former Christian who renounced the faith and became an avid atheist, made it her mission to promote and promulgate the doctrine of unbelief. Towards that effort, Veronika devised a simple experiment that would clearly show her students that God didn't exist, while extoling the virtues of atheism and communism. However, God had other plans for, not only the experiment, but also Veronika. Believing that Veronika is responsible for sabotaging her own experiment in order to promote Christianity to the children rather than denounce it, she is arrested by the soviet authorities and placed in one of the Soviet Union's most terrifying prisons, Lefortovo Prison. During her imprisonment, she meets Anya Federova, the wife of a prominent Christian pastor and a fellow inmate. In an attempt to prove her innocence and clear her name, Veronika tries to convince Anya of the absurdity of believing in God and engages her in a series of discussions involving religious themes. By the end of these debates, it is Veronika who is ultimately convinced about the existence of God and accepts the Truth, regardless of the pain and suffering she knows she will have to endure in order to proclaim her re-found faith.
