Complete and unabridged with unpublished material, Dawson's observations during his 1878 survey of the Queen Charlotte Islands concerning the Haida culture are presented. George Mercer Dawson (1849 - 1901) was a Canadian geologist, surveyor and explorer. He travelled in western Canada including the northwest coast and Alaska.. Director of the Geological Survey of Canada 1895-1901. As well as his work in geology and land resources he had a special interest in native culture and languages.
