Holger Hoos fell under the spell of the heckelphone _as a teenager, but then had to wait for over three decades _before acquiring one of the fewer than 200 specimens _known to have ever existed. Meanwhile, he studied the bassoon with Benedikt Manemann, Michael Held and Heiko Dechert, _but then decided to pursue an academic career in computer _science, where part of his work has been on topics in _computer music. He now holds an Alexander von Humboldt Professorship _in Artificial Intelligence at RWTH Aachen University _(Germany), as well as a professorship in machine learning _at Universiteit Leiden (The Netherlands) and an adjunct _professorship in computer science at the University of British Columbia (Canada). Since 2019, he studies and plays the heckelphone.
