What if the voices in your head aren't a sign of madness, but the key to understanding who you really are? For fifty-seven years, John Michael has been having conversations with an invisible friend. At eight, hiding under a school staircase, he also created Alex Quentin - a confident alter ego who promised to handle everything the real him was too scared to face. One voice whispered love and truth. The other shouted about achievement and proving worth through worldly success. Guess which one he chose to follow most often? This brutally honest memoir traces a journey from a wounded six-year-old watching his parents drive away without him, to a sixty-three-year-old finally learning the difference between unconditional love and performance-based living. From boarding school beatings to business success, from heart attacks to spiritual awakening, from religious trauma to authentic faith. This is the story of a man who spent decades performing as someone else, only to discover his invisible friend was real all along. Written with unflinching honesty and surprising humour, "The Inside-Out" is for soul-hungry misfits, church-hurt believers, and anyone exhausted from trying to earn love they already possess. It's for those who suspect they might have their own invisible friends - and wonder which voice they should be listening to. Your story isn't over. Your invisible friend is real. And the conversation you've been avoiding might be the one that sets you free.
Autorenporträt
John Michael is a storyteller, misfit, and recovering perfectionist who spent thirty-three years building a business to prove his worth - only to discover he'd been asking the wrong question all along. His journey began in commercial kitchens as a chef, where he learned that following recipes could create consistent results - a lesson he'd spend decades trying to apply to everything else in life. When computers were still mysterious to most people, he moved into IT because he could make them do things others were afraid to attempt. This led to academia and eventually leadership development and coaching, where he discovered his gift for helping people transform. After surviving two heart attacks, a quadruple bypass, and the collapse of his consultancy empire, John Michael finally learned the difference between being successful and being alive. For over fifty-five years, he's been in conversation with an invisible friend who turned out to be more real than he ever imagined. A former corporate consultant who worked with armies, telecom operators, and major hotels across Asia Pacific, John Michael now uses his hard-won wisdom to help other misfits navigate the narrow road from performance to authenticity. He's discovered that the very wounds that nearly destroyed him have become his greatest qualifications for ministry. John Michael lives with his wife Annie and writes from their home in Singapore, where he's finally learned that worth isn't earned through achievement but received through grace. When he's not writing, you'll find him studying the Hebrew model of discipleship, marvelling at how neuroscience is catching up with biblical truth, and building an online community for soul-hungry skeptics and church-hurt believers. This is the first book in the Eden Chronicles, written forty-five years after a teacher told him he'd never be a writer. Turns out, some prophecies are spectacularly wrong.
