Born in Portuguese West Africa and raised in North Carolina, Wellman brought a global curiosity and Southern Gothic flair to everything he wrote. His works blended the weird and the wonderful with a distinct American voice-equal parts frontier grit and cosmic imagination.Wellman was a prolific contributor to the golden age of pulp magazines, with stories appearing in Astounding Science Fiction, Weird Tales, and Startling Stories. While known for classic sci-fi adventures like The Invading Asteroid, he also earned acclaim for his mystical "Silver John" stories, featuring a wandering balladeer battling supernatural forces in the Appalachian backwoods.A lifelong advocate for regional folklore and moral storytelling, Wellman received the World Fantasy Award for Lifetime Achievement and multiple Edgar Allan Poe Awards.
