The story follows Gipsy Latimer, a spirited and independent girl with a diverse background, having lived in various parts of the world due to her father's profession as a mining engineer. Gipsy's arrival at Briarcroft Hall is marked by her distinct American mannerisms and her vibrant personality, which quickly attract the attention of her peers. Despite the initial cultural shock and the strict rules of the school, Gipsy soon becomes a popular figure among the students, especially in the Lower School. Gipsy discovers that the school's Guilds, which are supposed to be inclusive, are dominated by the Sixth Form, leaving the Lower School with little say in their management. Her transformation and eloquence inspire her peers, and she becomes a symbol of resistance against the established hierarchy.
