Arminius Vambery was born in a poor Jewish family in Hungary. In school he showed a remarkable aptitude for languages. By the age of sixteen he was proficient in Hungarian, Latin, French and German and very soon acquired skill in English, Scandinavian, Russian and Serbian?languages.
