India in ancient times has encountered many foreign travellers and invaders. Shakas, Kushanas, Greeks, Persians, Huns, and Indo-Romans had conquered parts of India. Many Greek chronicle writers had written about the description of India. However, the Chinese Buddhist monks had a unique experience with India.

Samuel Beal (1825-1889) was an Oriental scholar and the first English person to translate Chinese sources into the English. He was appointed in 1872 to examine Buddhist Chinese books in India Office Library, London. He became a professor of Chinese Studies at University College, London in 1877. His Chinese Buddhist works on India include translations of travelogues which were composed from the fifth to seventh centuries ad, which are quite popular. His famous works comprise of Travels of Fah-Hian and Sung-Yun, Buddhist Pilgrims, from China to India (a.d. 400 and a.d. 518); The Romantic Legend of Buddha; Texts from the Buddhist Canon, Dhammapada; Buddhism in China, etc.
