Henryk Sienkiewicz (1846-1916) war ein polnischer Schriftsteller, Journalist und Literaturnobelpreisträger. Er wurde in Wola Okrzejska im damaligen russisch besetzten Teil Polens geboren und verbrachte sein Leben zwischen Polen und längeren Auslandsaufenthalten, unter anderem in den USA, Italien und der Schweiz. Mit seinen historischen Romanen wie Quo Vadis, Mit Feuer und Schwert und Die Sintflut erlangte er weltweiten Ruhm. 1905 erhielt er den Nobelpreis für Literatur als Anerkennung seines epischen Schaffens, das zur Stärkung des nationalen Bewusstseins beitrug. Sienkiewicz starb 1916 im schweizerischen Vevey.
