"It's Treasure Island meets The Outsiders... a grand adventure not to be missed." -Haris Orkin, award-winning author of the James Flynn Escapades Who you are could be the thing that gets you killed. Fifteen-year-old Bonnie Hartwright has no past, no family, and one too many run-ins with the law. When she's yanked from her latest foster home and shipped off to a so-called "reform sailing camp" on the storm-lashed Carolina coast, she thinks it's just another dead end. She couldn't be more wrong. This is no ordinary camp. It's a covert training ground for the Brigands of the Compass Rose-a centuries-old secret society of teen descendants from one of history's most feared pirates. With blades in hand and sails snapping in the wind, these digital-age outcasts are preparing for a battle against a shadowy enemy that wants them-and their legacy-erased. As Bonnie is forced to master cutlass combat, cryptic sea charts, and the brutal codes of piracy, she's torn between two allies: Wilder, a reckless, magnetic thief with secrets of his own, and Reed, the brooding heir to the society's legendary founder. But as a dark, magical storm brews on the horizon, Bonnie begins to unravel a terrifying truth-one that links her forgotten past to a deadly destiny. The only way to survive is to uncover who she really is. Before the sea claims her forever. The Brigands of the Compass Rose is a pulse-pounding, high-seas adventure where ancient secrets collide with modern rebellion. Packed with romance, sword fights, and black magic, this is the YA thrill ride you didn't know you were waiting for.
Autorenporträt
Toni Runkle and Steve Webb have always loved telling stories. After becoming friends as graduate students at the USC School of Cinematic Arts, they worked separately in the movie and television industry for a number of years before coming together to write novels for young readers. Their first book, Glitter Girl, was called "...an empowering message about striving to be true to oneself..." by Kirkus Reviews. Toni loves scary movies, her garden, and trips to the beach. Steve loves baseball, not-so-scary movies, and a good cheeseburger. Both writers are married (not to each other because that would get weird) and live in Southern California with their respective families.
