Influenced by authors like Émile Zola, Norris sought to depict life with a focus on the raw, often harsh realities of human existence. His most famous works include McTeague (1899), a novel about greed and obsession, and The Octopus (1901), which examines the power of monopolistic corporations and their impact on individuals. Despite his early death at 32, Norris's works had a lasting impact on American literature, particularly in the naturalist genre.
