The Portrait of a Lady is a novel by Henry James, first published as a serial in The Atlantic Monthly and Macmillan's Magazine in 1880-81 and then as a book in 1881. It is one of James's most popular novels and is regarded by critics as one of his finest. The Portrait of a Lady is the story of a spirited young American woman, Isabel Archer, who, "affronting her destiny," finds it overwhelming. Henry James (1843-1916) was born in New York City and educated there and in London, Paris, and Geneva. Cosmopolitan and multilingual, he spent most of his life in Europe. He wrote twenty-two novels, one hundred and twelve short stories, twelve plays, and more than two hundred essays and reviews as well as travel books and autobiographies. Considered among the greatest authors in world literature, his novels include Washington Square, The Portrait of a Lady, The Turn of the Screw, The Ambassadors, and The Golden Bowl.
