Step into the tumultuous world of 17th-century England, where faith and conscience shaped destinies. The Practical Works of the Rev. Richard Baxter, With a Life of the Author, and a Critical Examination of His Writings (Volume I) gathers the profound voice of one of the era's most influential Puritan thinkers. Here, Baxter's deeply personal puritan theological essays and christian devotional literature offer not only moral guidance and ethics, but also an invitation to religious self-examination that still resonates centuries later. These pages are alive with puritan spirituality themes, crafted in the shadow of the English Civil War and in dialogue with the likes of John Owen and Thomas Watson. Baxter's works are a touchstone for scholars of religious history and a vital theology students resource, illuminating the spiritual landscape that shaped modern Protestant thought. His reflections move beyond doctrine, reaching into the heart of everyday life, challenging readers to consider the enduring questions of faith, duty, and conscience. For casual readers, the collection opens a window onto the era's fervent search for truth; for collectors, it stands as a testament to the power of classic christian devotional literature. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike.
Autorenporträt
Richard Baxter (1615-1691) preached "as a dying man to dying men." He was devoted to God and was a faithful follower of Jesus Christ. Best known as the minister of Kidderminster in England, his love for God and others resulted in practically the entire town of Kidderminster turning to Jesus during Baxter's ministry there. Richard Baxter desired unity among Christians, which often resulted in opposition from those who held to church loyalty or theological views rather than to Christ and God's Word. Baxter had his share of persecution, even being imprisoned on several occasions.
