Set in 12th century Germany, The Saint and the Scribe is the story of a remarkable nun, Hildegard of Bingen, told by the monk who secretly loves her. Volmar knows from an early age that he is destined for a life of service to God, and desires no other life. He enters the monastery at Disibodenberg at the age of 15, and fully expects to remain there, serving God, for the rest of his life. What he does not expect is that he will fall in love with an intriguing and beautiful young woman, who is also destined to remain at the monastery for life. Having taken lifelong vows of chastity, Volmar is unable to tell Hildegard of his love for her, but he is able to show his love, through a lifetime of loyal friendship and devoted service. While the story provides an insight into the lives of medieval monastics, it moves beyond this, by exploring themes of loyalty, faith and worldly ambition. Most importantly, it is a story about love, and how this can be expressed in ways beyond mere words.
