W. W. Jacobs (1863-1943) was an English author best known for his macabre short story The Monkey's Paw, a chilling tale of fate and unintended consequences. Though he gained lasting fame for this supernatural classic, much of Jacobs's work was humorous and centered on life among sailors and dockworkers, drawing from his own experiences growing up near the London docks.
