Roger is a born and bred native of Lower Heath, North Shropshire. He was born in 1932 in a house, on what was once part of the Hills of Hawkestone Estate. In 1937 at the age of 5 he attended Lower Heath School, leaving at the age of 14. Unable to pursue college due to severe travel sickness, he "went to the tools" as an apprentice to George Ward, the "Joiner, Wheelwright and Undertaker," based in Fauls Green.Attached to the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry Regiment to serve his National Service he was stationed on Salisbury Plain, then Germany joining the British Army of the Rhine; patrolling the Rhine and monitoring the Minden Gap. As a reserve for the Army football team, he was lucky enough, to almost always, gain a place on the pitch. His love of football continues to this day, matched by his love and enthusiasm for local history especially the Hills of Hawkestone.When George Ward retired, Roger became the local builder. More than a job... it was a way of life, enabling him to interview parishioners and collect more stories from the past. Combined with his passion for collecting old postcards and photographs of the area, it enabled Roger to write a detailed and entertaining history of Lower Heath School and the community it served and built.
