Mark Twain (1835-1910), quien en realidad se llamaba Samuel Langhorne Clemens, era un chico de once años cuando murió su padre y tuvo que ganar el sustento trabajando como aprendiz en una imprenta. En poco tiempo dominó el difícil oficio de tipógrafo, que le iniciaría en el mundo literario, y siendo adolescente aún comenzó a soñar con ver su nombre en un periódico. Así que de forma precoz inició su carrera autoral con relatos breves, en los que se insinuaba el talento que caracterizaría su pródiga y original obra.
