Frances Browne Arthur (1854-1920) was an Irish author known for her children's books. She was the daughter of Rev. John Browne, a Presbyterian minister in Manorcunningham, County Donegal. Her pen name, Ray Cunningham, was taken from the Ray townland in Donegal, where her family resided. Arthur was also the niece of Frances Browne, a blind poet famous for Granny's Wonderful Chair, a classic children's book that influenced Arthur's own writing, particularly in her 1909 work The Secret of the Cedar Rose. Frances married Professor James Arthur, an English academic, and they moved to Edinburgh, where they had two daughters and a son. Over the course of her career, Arthur published about eleven books, primarily aimed at young readers. Her works often focused on themes of adventure, friendship, and personal growth, reflecting her own values and experiences. She passed away in 1920, leaving behind a legacy of beloved children's literature that continues to be appreciated by readers today.
