Isabella Bird, a British female traveler, traveled from Tokyo to Hokkaido between June and September of 1878. In her travelogue "Unbeaten Tracks in Japan," she wrote a detailed account of the houses, clothing, customs, and natural scenery of Japan during the Meiji Restoration. This work can be enjoyed in both Japanese and English translations.
