" Professor Mathew N. Schmalz, PhD Mathew N. Schmalz was born and raised in Massachusetts, where he lived until he graduated from Amherst College and attended graduate school at the University of Chicago. He is now a professor of comparative religions at the College of the Holy Cross, a Catholic liberal arts institution in Worcester, Massachusetts. He has also worked for the Catholic Church in various non- academic roles, including managing a homeless shelter in New York City and serving as a volunteer with Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity in India. Dr. Schmalz has been married to his wife, Kristin, for over twenty years, and together they are raising two daughters, Anna and Katie. They are animal lovers and at various times have had goldfish, a rabbit, hermit crabs, a gecko, a large standard poodle, chickens, and a potbellied pig.
