Two issues in 21st century society can be highlighted: the large generation of waste; the lack of adequate waste treatment systems; and the growing demand for energy. The search for alternatives to deal with these issues has mobilized the public and private sectors to explore solutions not yet practiced in most of the developing world. Among the changes presented, one of the most relevant is the exclusive destination of only "tailings" to landfills, "tailings" being understood as waste that can no longer be treated. Compliance with this law will require the study of alternatives for treating waste generated in the phase prior to its final disposal. Among the possible solutions is the use of energy, which is also provided for in the PNRS. In this context, this work seeks to analyze two waste treatment technologies - anaerobic digestion and incineration - and verify their respective economic viability, taking the Brazilian scenario as its object.
