Yakutat began life as the United States Navy Barnegat-class seaplane tender USS Yakutat (AVP-32). She was laid down on 1 April 1942 by Associated Shipbuilders, Inc. at Seattle, Washington, launched on 2 July 1943, and commissioned into the U.S. Navy on 31 March 1944.
