United States Wilderness is an ever-important theme as its unique legal protections offer a glimpse into natural ecosystems that are truly unaltered by man. Wilderness areas not only provide unique recreation and solitude opportunities for mankind, but also act as a safe harbor to many sensitive plant and wildlife species. This paper presents a brief review of wilderness planning in the United States, as well as a review of conservation concerns specific to the California desert region. Ecological connectivity is a concept widely used in ecological conservation, but has generally been ignored by wilderness and other recreation/usership-based conservation efforts. Ultimately, this paper presents recommendations for incorporating ecological connectivity in California desert wilderness planning.
