B.F. Skinner (1904-1990), psicólogo estadounidense y principal exponente del conductismo, revolucionó la comprensión de la conducta al concebirla como una función de variables presentes tanto en el entorno físico y social como en los ámbitos público y privado del individuo. Su interés por la psicología surgió tras conocer los estudios del fisiólogo ruso I. P. Pavlov sobre los reflejos condicionados. Tras obtener su doctorado en la Universidad de Harvard en 1931, permaneció allí como investigador hasta 1936, antes de trasladarse a la Universidad de Minnesota y luego a la Universidad de Indiana, regresando definitivamente a Harvard en 1948. Entre sus obras más influyentes destacan La conducta de los organismos (1938), Ciencia y conducta humana (1953) y Conducta verbal (1957). Además de su incuestionable contribución experimental, Skinner es célebre por haber extrapolado de manera brillante los procesos de condicionamiento a la complejidad de la conducta humana y, en especial, al lenguaje.
