This surprising, entertaining, and original book is a historical and social study focused on the lives and contributions of women activists in Spain during the 19th and early 20th centuries. As cities took shape in the 19th century, they became a breeding ground for social change and new ideas to improve the daily lives of the most disadvantaged. These changes included highly subversive ideas that even attempted to replace religion, leading to the explosion of theories such as mesmerism, spiritualism, and theosophy. These spiritualist options enjoyed great popularity but ended up being ridiculed, as the emergence of Darwinism was warmly welcomed by the brand-new capitalists, supporters of the struggle for survival of the fittest, and not very keen on inclusive, supportive, and participatory options.
