Archetypal Symbolism in Fairytales: Opposition and Redemption Marie-Louise von Franz - Translated by Mark Kyburz In this landmark volume of her Collected Works, renowned Jungian analyst Marie-Louise von Franz explores one of the most fundamental themes in fairytales and the human psyche: the dynamic interplay of opposites-and the possibility of redemption through their reconciliation. Drawing on decades of penetrating analysis, von Franz unearths the symbolic power of fairytale narratives as blueprints for inner transformation. Through rich interpretation of stories from diverse cultural traditions, she illuminates archetypal oppositions-light and shadow, masculine and feminine, ego and unconscious-and reveals how these polarities are not merely sources of conflict, but invitations to growth and wholeness. This new translation by Mark Kyburz brings von Franz's profound insights into vivid contemporary language, making her essential wisdom more accessible than ever. A vital resource for therapists, scholars, and seekers alike, Archetypal Symbolism in Fairytales: Opposition and Redemption offers a compelling journey into the mythic foundations of the soul's healing. "In fairytales, nothing is superfluous-every symbol carries the weight of centuries of psychic truth." - Marie-Louise von Franz Table of Contents The Problem of Redemption A. At the age of eighteen, while still in high school, Marie-Louise von Franz met Carl Jung at his Bolingen Tower. She later described this as the most decisive encounter of her life. She entered analysis with him months later, completed her doctorate in classical philology and began seeing her first analysands soon after. She was wholeheartedly dedicated to the unconscious, both in her own life and that of her analysands. She developed a far-reaching expertise in fairytales, alchemy, synchronicity and numbers. She is estimated to have personally analyzed over 65,000 dreams. "She was a prolific writer and a highly sought-after teacher. Listening to von Franz lecture was a numinous experience. I thought God was speaking. She seemed to know everything. In an amazing fashion and without a text, she ranged over history West and East, mythology, philosophy, anthropology, and a host of other specialized areas. Never in my training had I heard such far-reaching and profound reflections." (Murray Stein, PhD)
