"When I Was a Boy" describes the life of a young boy and teenager growing up in rural southwestern Arkansas; some of it was pastural and full of exploring the nearby landscape, and some of it was the necessary tasks contributing to fulfilling the needs of family life without the modern conveniences. Some of it records unique adventures on a nearby river and creeks that remain strong memories to this day, but a lot of it was the conflict with a father who was a very self-sufficient, ingenious, and family support dedicated man but was also authoritarian, completely self-centered and unfeeling for anyone's needs except his own. He was also, in later years, treated for mental instability. This book is about survival in that home and the help and support of someone outside the house who helped me personally redefine who I was. I hope this book helps those who may have experienced similar circumstances.
Jerry Thomas Caplinger is retired and enjoying life by playing golf as much as he can, fishing and hunting whenever possible, and pursuing his interest in metaphysics, music, photography, and scientific and archaeological discoveries. He has five great-grandchildren. He grew up in a home in southwest Arkansas that included four brothers and one sister. He retired from a 34-year career in the telecommunications industry, where he was responsible for industry-leading services development, initial network trials, and, in later years, deployment planning for highly advanced data network routing systems for a leading U.S. nationwide telecommunications company (Verizon).Jerry spent the summers of his high school years in Oregon living with his grandmother and working on a farm, handling mostly irrigation work. In his off time, he played on a men's industrial league softball team and enjoyed water skiing on the nearby Willamette River. Back home in high school, he excelled in sports and won "The Most Outstanding Player" award in football his senior year. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the era of the Vietnam conflict by helping maintain nuclear weapons, teaching aircraft weapons systems maintenance and weapons loading, and observing weapons loading teams in Greece. He was promoted to E-5 (Staff Sergeant) before his honorable discharge.
